BUSINESS UPDATES | MCCTC program receives Gene Haas Foundation grant
CANFIELD — The Advanced Manufacturing program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road, has received a grant from the Gene Haas Foundation to support scholarships and student competition teams.
A portion of the grant can be used toward sponsorships of competitions highlighting the CNC/Manufacturing programs such as SkillsUSA and FIRST Robotics, a news release states.
The Gene Haas Foundation was formed in 1999 to fund the needs of the local community. Gene Haas is the owner of Haas Automation Inc., which was started in 1983 to manufacture economical and reliable machine tools, according to the company's website.
Dog adoption event
at Boardman Subaru
BOARDMAN — Boardman Subaru, 7811 South Ave., and Every Dog Matters Rescue Group will host their third annual dog adoption event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 17 in the front parking lot of the dealership.
The event will feature adoptable dogs, a bake sale and crafts made by volunteers. There will be no adoption fees due to a grant from Subaru of America and the ASPCA.
Youngstown-based company will work
to advance manufacturing technologies
YOUNGSTOWN — The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining, a subsidiary of Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group Inc., on Thursday announced the creation of a new Limited Liability Company, the Advanced Manufacturing and Applied Research Innovation Institute.
The wholly owned subsidiary of NCDMM will be based in Youngstown and will work to further advance manufacturing technologies to strengthen the manufacturing industry and economy of Northeast Ohio, a news release states.
AMARII announced it is soliciting an open call on project ideas that address topics such as manufacturing, machining, process improvement, automation, supply chain enhancement, energy and energy efficiency, technology enhancement and cost reduction.
Submitted project ideas that support AMARII's mission and demonstrate the ability to advance manufacturing technologies, promote job growth and retention and strengthen economic competitiveness will receive priority consideration.

Excalibur Barber owner donates
tablets to Youngstown City Schools
YOUNGSTOWN — Kelan Bilal, owner of Excalibur Barber Grooming Lounge at Southern Park Mall, donated 24 Amazon Fire tablets to Youngstown City School District to use as an incentive to boost student attendance.
"I really just want to always let these students and our schools know that the community has their back," Bilal said in a news release. "I understand that every bit of positive encouragement for any type of academic accomplishment is motivating and energizing."
Bilal also donated tablets to YCSD this past summer to encourage students to read.
"Mr. Bilal is a great partner to YCSD and for education," YCSD CEO Justin Jennings said in the release. "We all know that scholars can't learn if they aren't either in school or, in the case of remote learning, logging into their classes. The tablets Mr. Bilal is so generously donating will be added motivation to encourage our young people to log in to all of their classes every day."
Virtual event will connect startups,
corporations and funders
WARREN — BRITE Energy Innovators, 125 W. Market St., and Columbus-based 614Startups will host a virtual discussion, Ohio Next Energy Summit, from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 14.

A Lordstown Motors official will discuss the technology used in the Endurance pickup truck. The discussion will give attendees insight into how Lordstown Motors hopes to revolutionize the electric-vehicle market.
Four startups — Brilliency, Hyperion Motors, Li-Ion Tamer and NODIS Smart Glass will demonstrate each of their technologies.
There also will be a panel discussion on commercializing new technologies, featuring industry experts from utilities, corporations and investors, and moderated by Courtney Gras an engineer, entrepreneur and LaunchPad director for Techstars.
Bon Secours Mercy Health honored
for its employee well-being program
YOUNGSTOWN — Business Group on Health, a nonprofit association of more than 440 large employers, honored Bon Secours Mercy Health, parent company of Mercy Health — Youngstown, for its employee well-being program.
Bon Secours Mercy Health is among 39 U.S. employers that received 2020 Best Employers: Excellence in Health & Well-Being awards presented at the Business Group's virtual Workforce Strategy 2020 Conference. Bon Secours Mercy Health received a Silver Award for its Be Well employee well-being program.
"Bon Secours Mercy Health's vision to be where associates want to work, clinicians want to practice, people seek wellness and communities thrive starts with associates being their best self," Joe Gage, Bon Secours Mercy Health's chief human resources officer, said in a news release. Ohio Valley investments meeting
PITTSBURGH — ReImagine Appalachia, in partnership with the Heartland Capital Network and the Center for Sustainable Business at the University of Pittsburgh, on Wednesday held an invitation-only digital meeting on a Sustainable Finance Hub aimed at identifying steps that can expand capital available in the Ohio Valley for projects that create good union jobs, slash carbon emissions and promote community and environmental health.
Mayors Jamael Tito Brown of Youngstown, Bill Peduto of Pittsburgh and Steve Williams of Huntington, W.Va., led a discussion on "building coalitions for impact," aimed at unleashing collective government procurement to kickstart demand for clean energy, energy efficiency and local sourcing of manufactured products.
"You could see the power of the unique coalition of innovative mayors, labor, finance, economic development and business leaders we brought together today," Stephen Herzenberg, executive director of Keystone Research Center and co-chair of ReImagine Appalachia, said in a news release. "We're all committed to defining how federal, state and local policies, working people's pensions and local government procurement can drive investment and job creation in shared prosperity and sustainability."
Mahoning County ESC hosts
weekly virtual hiring event
CANFIELD — The Mahoning County Educational Service Center will host its weekly virtual hiring event at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
Participants in the Zoom event will hear about positions available in local school districts. Available positions at Tuesday's meeting include preschool and school-age education aide, substitute teacher, tutor, special services aide, school nurse substitute, Help Me Grow home visitor, grant writer and transportation aide. Positions may change or be added throughout the school year based on need.

ribbon-cutting after remodeling
AUSTINTOWN — Westside Tire & Service had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at its Austintown location, 4881 Mahoning Ave., to celebrate remodeling at the facility.
The company remodeled the facility's waiting rooms, added offices and renovated the service check-in area.
