HERMITAGE, Pa. — NIU by TALLS, a low-sugar tropical juice drink company, was awarded a $10,000 Paypal Empowerment Grant, a joint program between Association for Enterprise Opportunity and PayPal.

The grant program was created in "response to the global pandemic and civil unrest that is disproportionately affecting the Black community," according to an email announcing the award.

NIU by TALLS' plans for the funds include the launch of more drink flavors, including Berry Blast and Orange Eden, and covering bills and other obligations accrued during the pandemic.

"We're also going to use some of the funds to continue on with our plan to launch some of our promotional merchandise and apparel," Cynthia Torrence, NIU by TALLS CEO and a junior at Hickory High School, said in a news release.

The company's low-sugar tropical juice does not contain artificial flavors or sweeteners.

"NIU juice is great for kids whose parents want to find a healthy and tasty alternative for their regular sugary sodas and juices used in lunches," Torrence said. "It also provides an option for vegan families and groups all the way to adults who are interested in dieting or just want to take a sugar cut in their everyday meals."
