Youngstown celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning Valley's celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month will continue Oct. 10 with the opening of "Crossings," an art exhibit at the Youngstown State University Maag Library from 5 to 7 p.m..

YSU is hosting a Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Oct. 12 at 12 p.m. in the Kilcawley Center.

The Skeggs Lecture Series will feature Martin Sheen Oct. 16 at Stambaugh Auditorium. Tickets were free but distributed in September.

A Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar is planned for Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the OCCHA Community Room. Dr. Consuelo Mendez and Dr. Zoraida Mendez will provide information on cancer awareness and early detection.

Organización Cívica y Cultural Hispana Americana's 47th annual fundraiser will take place Friday, Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. at the Stambaugh Auditorium Ballroom. Tickets are $50 and available at www.stambaughauditorium.com.

OCCHA is a non-profit that aims to improve the quality of life for Hispanics and others in the multicultural community.

OCCHA will also host Veteran's Appreciation Dinner at OCCHA Social Hall Nov. 16 at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 per person and includes dinner and drink.

Hispanic Heritage Month, which is dedicated to celebrating the contributions and history of the Hispanic and Latino Americans, runs Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

This year's theme is: "Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation."

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded to a month-long designation by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
