Boardman high school art student wins banner contest
Students and art teachers from Boardman High School are spreading the word about the importance of Fair Housing Month and getting rewarded for it.
Julie Larson, Chief Executive Officer of Youngstown Columbiana Association of Realtors, said after giving an educational presentation to the high school art students about the importance and 55th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, the students were invited to participate in a fair housing design competition for a banner.
Forty-five art students submitted designed for the banner that would hang on YCAR’s garage wall facing Market St. for the month of April.
One design by Dimitra Coutris was selected as the winner and her work was celebrated April 18 by YCAR and the art department.
Coutris received a $100 cash prize from YCAR; Larson also presented a check for $3,500 to Boardman Schools for the school to purchase iPads and thumb drives for the art students. She said this would further their art education in creating digital artwork and media.
Larson said they could host the celebration with the students’ thanks to a $7,500 grant from the National Association of REALTORS.
