The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance recently presented a check for $10,000 to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley.

The check was presented at a luncheon meeting Wednesday at The Lake Club in Poland. Proceeds came from a charity Basket Stroll event held in March, a news release states.

The Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance is a volunteer organization comprised of physician spouses who provide local support to the community through health education, legislation, community service and fundraising.

8 Neighborhood SUCCESS grants awarded

Neighborhood SUCCESS Grants, a program of The Raymond John Wean Foundation, recently awarded more than $30,000 to eight resident-led organizations.

A variety of projects, all centering on race equity and inclusion, received grants, a news release states. Funded projects range from poetry workshops to community building programs.

Grants were awarded to:

  • Boulevard Park Block Watch: Boulevard Park Phase IV, a project to bring neighbors with diverse backgrounds together through community building activities that include maintenance of the blueberry patch, landscaping and neighborhood gatherings;
  • Chess is Life: Zulu Boxing, a project for mentoring, physical fitness and boxing as a strategy to support student success inside and outside the classroom;
  • Dare to Dream Children’s Foundation: CultureConnect, a project to assist qualified households with obtaining electronic devices and gaining internet access;
  • Detroit Pemberton Neighborhood Association: Pemberton Park Vacant Lot Beautification, a beautification project to build on improvements of a vacant lot adjacent to the park;
  • Know Your Neighbor Block Watch: KYN: Expanding the Potential of our Youth — Benita Avenue Project, a project to expand the potential of local youths by providing quality hands-on training through helping senior citizens and disabled individuals with yard work and general exterior home maintenance;
  • Lit Youngstown: Writers-in-Residence Poetry and Black History Tour, a project to host three weekend events featuring prominent regional writers and a local historian;
  • Northeast Homeowners and Concerned Citizens Association: NHCCA Year-Around Neighborhood Beautification, a project designed to control litter, provide safety services and beautify green spaces in their area;
  • Will RESPECT Inc.: From Beefin to Brotherhood Mentoring Project, a project to host a series of community forums to explore, discuss and seek to resolve long-standing conflicts among youths and young adults to reduce and eliminate the potential for violence within the community.

Wild Ones Youngstown Area Chapter has ribbon-cutting

Wild Ones Youngstown Area Chapter had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday in honor of its first spring symposium and the new little free library and giving box that was recently placed at its headquarters, 2101 Hubbard Road, Youngstown.

The giving box is for seeds, bulbs, small gardening items and other donations, a news release states.

Wild Ones promotes environmentally friendly landscaping to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities, the release states. It provides free educational resources and learning opportunities that are open to the public.
