BUSINESS ROUNDUP | Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo returning to Canfield Fairgrounds
The third annual Mahoning Valley Skilled Trades Expo will return to the Canfield Fairgrounds on Wednesday.
The event, which is free and open to the public from 3 to 6 p.m., offers students and adults “the opportunity to explore trades through a variety of interactive exhibits representing more than a dozen in-demand trades,” a news release states.
Trades that will be represented include boilermakers, bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, elevator constructors, insulators, ironworkers, laborers, operating engineers, painters, plaster/cement masons, plumbers and pipefitters, roofers and waterproofers, sheet metal workers and teamsters.
More than 5,000 students in grades seven through 12 from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Mercer, Lawrence and Portage counties are expected to attend the expo during reserved times Wednesday and Thursday, according to the release.

AWARD NOMINEE: Courtney Kelly, a public safety fire instructor at Choffin Career & Technical Center, has been nominated for the 2022-23 National LifeChanger of the Year award, sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation. The award “recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership,” a news release states. The award includes “$10,000 to be split between a $5,000 individual cash award and a $5,000 donation to the winner’s school/district.”
BERK EXPANSION: Berk Enterprises Inc., 1554 Thomas Road SE, Warren, is opening a second location in Jackson, Mississippi, a news release states. The new facility will open Nov. 1 and expects to employ 30 to 40 people. The company has operated in Warren since 1946.
PARKS AND RECREATION SUMMIT: The inaugural Mahoning Valley Parks and Recreation Professionals Leadership Summit will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 14 at Packard Music Hall, 1703 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren. The purpose of the event, organized by the Healthy Community Partnership-Mahoning Valley and the Trumbull County MetroParks, is “to strengthen relationships between parks and recreation professionals, community partners, and elected officials as well as presenting information about resources to support parks and recreation capital and capacity needs,” a news release states. ROBOTICS COMPETITION: The 2022 Mahoning Valley Robotics Challenge will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 9 in the main gymnasium at Austintown Middle School, 800 S. Raccoon Road. The event is free and open to the public. The event will feature 22 FIRST Robotics Competition teams from Ohio and western Pennsylvania.
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS: Levy Gardens Assisted Living Facility, 584 Granada Ave., Youngstown, will celebrate 25 years of serving the community with an open house from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday. Tours will begin at 3 p.m., and a formal program is schedule for 4:30 p.m., a news release states.
SWCD ELECTION: The Mahoning Soil & Water Conservation District recently announced details for its annual election of supervisors. Votes can be cast in person from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from Oct.10 through Nov. 8 at the SWCD office, 850 Industrial Road, Youngstown. An absentee ballot can be requested by calling 330-740-7995 or emailing askswcd@mahoningcountyoh.gov. Richard S. Scarsella, Fred Owens and Matthew P. RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONIES: Night & Day Beauty Boutique, 814 N. State St., Girard, had a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to celebrate its grand opening. The Youngstown Event Center, 12 East Dewey Ave., will celebrate more than 250 events hosted at the facility with a ceremony at 11 a.m. Friday.
