Goodwill enters online thrifting with GoodwillFinds
The number of first-time thrift shoppers reached 33 million in 2022. Resale icon Goodwill wants to grow the number of e-commerce thrifters with GoodWillFinds, a second-hand search engine making 100,000 donated items available to buy online immediately. This is Goodwill’s first entry into national-level coordinated e-commerce, although individual stores have used various digital shopping platforms for years. For example, you’ve purchased a pre-owned book on Amazon, there’s a chance it’s come from a Goodwill brick-and-mortar, or your favorite Etsy shop might be shipped from a local Goodwill.
With the secondhand market poised to double by 2026, reaching $82 billion according to a resale report from ThredUp, it’s about time for the century-old thrift icon to take on newcomers like The RealReal, Etsy and Poshmark. In the growth plan, GoodwillFinds aims to have over a million unique vintage pieces for sale within the next few years, with member personalization, including early access to hot items. Those popular items might include luxury vintage goods like Chanel purses or Gucci clothing. Gucci is currently the top luxury brand to buy and sell resale.
Of course, you’ll also find a wide variety of unique thrifted apparel, similar to the mixture and character of pieces at your local Goodwill shop. For now donations still have to be dropped off at one of Goodwill’s 3000+ stores, but look to the future for mail-in drop-off donations, like competitor Poshmark.
According to that ThredUp report, while 72% of shoppers prefer to buy fast fashion because it’s a “good value for the money,” younger consumers are becoming more eco-conscious. 40% of Gen Zers said they bought clothes secondhand in 2019.
