Youngstown business looks to revitalize local economy, creates fun weekly event

A Youngstown business owner, who is passionate about his community, has created a fun way to help revitalize the local economy.

Bartell’s Take, owned by Justin Bartell and his wife Cara, opened in January and offers a variety of Japanese inspired dishes.

Bartell said as lifelong residents of Youngstown, the couple has always had a passion for food and community. He said they also missed the original Tokyo House.

“We were also patrons and fans of Can’s Tokyo House that was located in Youngstown. When he retired, we missed his food,” Bartell said. “We wanted to share our unique take on Japanese cuisine with the people here and give them something different, while also helping to foster a sense of community through food.”

After talking with owners of Penguin City Brewing Co., and with a strong desire to support local businesses, Tokyo Tuesdays was born.

Bartell said Tokyo Tuesdays is an exciting weekly event he started in partnership with Penguin City Brewing Co.

Every Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m, Bartell brings his Tokyo-inspired dishes to the brewery.

“We wanted to create a space where people could connect over great food and drinks while also supporting local businesses,” Bartell said. “It’s an evening filled with great food, drinks, and a chance to bring the Youngstown community together in a fun, laid-back setting.”

Bartell explained that he and his wife, who graduated from Youngstown State University, believe in the potential of their hometown and want to be a part of its success.

“We’ve seen how much local businesses contribute to the vibrancy of our city, and we want to be part of that revitalization,” he said. “It’s about giving back to the community that raised us and helping it grow for the future.”

Bartell said local businesses thrive when the community is engaged and Tokyo Tuesdays offers people a chance to support local businesses and enjoy themselves. He said the new event helps strengthen the local economy and brings new energy to downtown Youngstown.

Bartell shared that Penguin City Brewing Co. has been incredible to work with and is deeply committed to supporting local businesses. He said the partnership has allowed him to bring something unique to Youngstown

“The brewery’s atmosphere is perfect for enjoying our dishes, and their involvement has been key in bringing the community out for these events,” Bartell said.

Tokyo Tuesdays are held every Tuesday night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Penguin City Brewing Co. The brewery opens at 4 p.m. and is at 460 East Federal St. in Youngstown.

“Tokyo Tuesdays is our way of engaging with the community and helping revitalize the downtown area, one week at a time,” Bartell said.
