Cleveland-founded fabric & craft stores in Mahoning Valley part of nationwide downsizing

Thirty-three Joann fabric and craft store locations in Ohio are closing, including three in the Mahoning Valley area:

  • 15765 State Route 170 Suite 1 in East Liverpool
  • 555 Youngstown Warren Road #14 in Niles
  • 441 Boardman Poland Road in Youngstown

In Pennsylvania, there are 30 stores included on the nationwide closing list, including a few close to the Mahoning Valley:

  • 1800 Park Manor Blvd Unit 5 in Pittsburgh
  • 513 Clairton Blvd in Pittsburgh
  • 7375 McKnight Road in Pittsburgh
  • 20111 Route 19 in Cranberry Township

Joann has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to records from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware.

According to joannrestructuring.com, the going-out-of-business sales start Feb. 15 at stores listed above.

Michael Prendergast, interim CEO of JOANN, said the last several years have presented significant and lasting challenges in the retail environment.

“Our current financial position and constrained inventory levels forced us to take this step,” Prendergast said. “After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths, we have determined that initiating a court supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business.”

“We hope that this process enables us to find a path that would allow JOANN to continue operating as a going concern,” he added.

Without a buyer, the company made the tough decision to close 500 stores across 49 states in the U.S.

But not all the stores are closing, according to a spokesperson for JOANN.

“A careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the Company determined which stores should remain operating as usual at this time,” the spokesperson said. “Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN.”

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, 13 Ohio stores will still be open after the restructuring, including in North Canton and Mansfield.

Joann was founded in Cleveland 80 years ago.
