Local resident’s passion for true antiques becomes favorite vintage shop in Columbiana
Looking for unique decor to add a pop of personality to your place?
Visit The Rustic Birdcage and get what you’re looking for with help from owner Jane Bohrer, a former x-ray technician and antiques enthusiast.
Bohrer opened The Rustic Birdcage in 2019 in Columbiana and has welcomed thrifty shoppers looking for all things vintage, from furniture to taxidermy.
“After I my hurt neck, I couldn’t go back to work at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, so I decided to try what I’ve always loved doing - buying and selling antiques,” Bohrer said. “I’ve always loved antiques, and this is true antiques.”
She said the Columbiana community has been a great fit for her business.
“Columbiana is known for little antique stores and there are a lot of us out here, plus shops, breweries and wineries,” Bohrer said. “We even have young shoppers who come in with their grandparents or parents, and they all like antiques, so it’s interesting to see that.”
At The Rustic Birdcage, there are one-of-a-kind antiques coming in every week, according to Bohrer.
“There’s a little bit of everything for everyone,” she said. “We have a really cool variety of antiques, from salvaged gas and old petroleum equipment to hand-welded furniture and collectibles to give your home that farmhouse look.”
“We have old Rat Fink and Big Boy statues, plus the Betty Boop statues,” Bohrer added.
Bohrer works with vendors who are furniture makers and those who set up booths showcasing their finds and flipped antiques into new-age treasure.
“To start a business, you have to build up your clientele so people can learn who you are and you can build up a list of vendors,” she said. “The vendors at The Rustic Birdcage and I are a small but mighty team bringing in antiques that all have a certain style we’re going for.”
Visit The Rustic Birdcage from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 13 E. Park Ave. in Columbiana.
