Boardman fitness studio offers northeast Ohio’s unique resistance bed Pilates classes
Mega Barre in Boardman is northeast Ohio’s only boutique fitness gym offering unique classes like box step, dance cardio, yoga, barre and advanced cardio workouts called Lagree.
How long has Mega Barre been open?
In 2013, Mega Barre founder Laura Zavadil started teaching group barre fitness to Youngstown clients.
“We’re independently owned and going on 13 years now,” said Zavadil.
Inside Mega Barre, there are two studio rooms separating the types of classes you can take.
“One is called the multi-modality room,” she said. “That’s where we have strength training classes, barre, mat Pilates and bounce and build, which is on a mini rebounder. It’s a mix of strength and cardio in the multi-modality room.”
Barre is a combination of ballet dance positions and Pilates exercise.
Zavadil’s team soon expanded and she was able to offer new classes including box step and strength-training workouts.
“In our second room is our Megaformers. We teach the Lagree method which is very unique to our area. It’s high-intensity, low impact on a resistance bed,” she said.
Mega Barre’s co-owner, Erin Fleming, introduced Lagree and the Megaformers to the Mahoning Valley area in 2019.
It’s a workout routine created by Sebastian Lagree that trainers around the U.S. have started using.
All classes are full-body workouts and all levels are welcome for all classes, according to Zavadil.
What’s a class at Mega Barre in Boardman like?
First, sign up for class online or using the Mega Barre app. Make sure to arrive ten minutes early for your first class and sign the waiver.
Here’s what you’ll need for class:
- Clean workout shoes
- Grippy socks for Megaformers
- Water bottle
- Towel
- Athletic clothes
Once you get to class, your instructor will let you know what additional items you need, like weights, resistance bands and foam mats.
If you’d happen to walk by a class, you’d hear the encouraging trainer playing upbeat, high-tempo music and shouting encouragement.
Throughout the room there are mirrors so everyone in the room can see the instructor’s movements. The class is a full-body workout.
