Family opens coffee shop inside refurbished Columbiana County cider mill
Community members are invited to stop in and slow down at a family-owned coffee shop that’s newly opened inside a refurbished cider mill in Columbiana County.
Wynn Horst is the co-owner of The Cider Mill Coffee and Cafe in New Waterford along with his dad, Leon Horst.
“We have a sandwich and deli shop across the street from the Cider Mill Coffee shop,” Wynn said.
The family has been operating Horst Sub & Deli since 2008.
“We’ve learned a lot over the years since then, and we really have a very supportive community in this area that supports the deli very well,” Wynn said. “We wanted to give it back to the community a little bit. The coffee shop’s a bit more of a love child as far as the investment we put into it to get it to where it’s at today. But the building’s very, very solid.”
Wynn said the building first went up for sale in 2022
“The owner came to us and asked if we’d be interested,” Wynn said. “We decided to buy it and were messing around with different options. I’ve always enjoyed specialty coffee shops, so it was born out of that. We decided to go that route and restored the building to bring a little bit of life back to it.”
This former cider mill on State Route 7 in New Waterford is believed to have been built sometime around the early 1900’s, according to Wynn.
“We want to make it a fun, chill gathering place for the community here,” he said. “The sandwich shop is fast-paced, high speed. For the coffee shop, I wanted something a bit more slow-paced, more of a gathering place. In the era of yesterday, as it were, people weren’t on their devices all the time, and they actually met up in person and had conversations. Since we’re in more of an older, rustic historic building, I thought it would be cool to try to promote that type of atmosphere, more of a throwback.”
The Cider Mill Coffee and Cafe is open from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday at 5368 State Route 7 in New Waterford.
“We’re working with some local people, bringing in different bakery items, and then also the milk we use for the espresso drinks and things like that come from Baker’s Golden Dairy, which is just five minutes down the road from the coffee shop,” Wynn said.
