VW Atlas Hits 1 Million Units in the US as New Model Nears
Atlas Has Proven Its Place in VW's US Lineup
Nearly ten years after it first rolled off the line, the Volkswagen Atlas has quietly hit a milestone that says a lot about its place in the US market. One million units have now come out of the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant – not because of any one big sales year, but thanks to consistent demand year after year.
The Atlas has become one of Volkswagen's most important models in the US, now second only to the Tiguan in sales. In 2025, VW sold 71,044 Atlas units here, which helps explain how the SUV reached that million-unit milestone.
Built for the US, and It Shows
Volkswagen started building the Atlas in Chattanooga back in 2016, and from the start, it was designed with North American buyers in mind. That's clear in the essentials: three real rows, cargo space you can actually use, and a focus on comfort instead of just style.
In 2019, Volkswagen added the Atlas Cross Sport – a two-row version for those who wanted the same size and look but didn't need all the seats. Even so, most buyers still go for the standard Atlas, which accounts for about three-quarters of production, with the Cross Sport filling the rest.
Last year, the Atlas family moved over 100,000 units in the US. Nearly a third of all Volkswagens sold here now wear the Atlas badge in some form, which shows just how central this SUV has become to VW's plans in America.
This milestone also puts a spotlight on the Chattanooga plant and its team, both of which have grown with the Atlas program and now play a big part in Volkswagen's North American operations.
A New Chapter Starts with the 2027 Model
Volkswagen isn't letting up. The next Atlas has already made its debut at the New York International Auto Show, giving us a look at how VW plans to evolve its proven formula.
The 2027 Atlas gets a bolder look, more tech, and a more upscale interior, but the basics haven't changed. It's still about space, practicality, and the features families actually use in a midsize SUV. More importantly, VW has confirmed that electrified versions of the Atlas family is on the horizon.
The new model is scheduled to go on sale in the US this fall. Not long after, Volkswagen will roll out the second-generation Atlas Cross Sport, rounding out the next phase of a nameplate that has quietly become one of the brand's most reliable performers.
