ReNew U opens in historic Glenwood Ave. building in Youngstown

A new outpatient center in northeast Ohio is open, offering mental health counseling, addiction treatment, recovery support and more.

Owner Adam Lonardo and the team at ReNew U Therapy and Wellness are hosting a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. on June 5 at 2125 Glenwood Ave. in Youngstown to commemorate the new beginning.

One of ReNew U’s team members is Dustin Hurst, who transitioned from working in steel mills to peer support in the substance use and recovery field.

“I did peer support for the last five years, and then recently I just started this new role with Renew U doing outreach and business development,” Hurst said. “I’m in recovery, so I wanted to work in the recovery field, which is why I did the peer support for as long as I did. Business development was always the goal and there was an opportunity here, so I jumped on it.”

The community response has been positive for ReNew U Therapy and Wellness, according to Hurst.

“We have a good team of providers, and having people on the team who understand the struggles that come with substance use plays a big part,” he said. “There’s often an overlap of dual diagnosis. A lot of people, even myself, see their mental health and substance use go hand in hand. Having a place where you can get the full continuum of care and being able to connect with providers who really understand and really get it, I think that’s a huge thing. It seems like people are really responding well to what we’re continuing and trying to build over there.”

Specializing in personalized mental health and substance use disorder treatment, ReNew U has options group therapy, individual counseling and psychoeducation to “help clients build resilience and recovery-focused skills.”

There’s a partial hospitalization program option at the center which also offers mental health counseling, medication management and medication-assisted treatment.

This is an evidence-based approach to treating substance use disorders like opioid or alcohol use disorders by combining FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies.

ReNew U’s historic Glenwood Avenue office building originally started as the practice for Dr. Richard Deibel Murray.

Dr. Murray was a plastic surgeon, artist, author and trailblazer in gender-affirming surgery.

“Our building is super beautiful, and it’s nice because [Lonardo] really tried to restore everything in it,” Hurst said. “We’ve got marble floors and statues plus this grand staircase.”
