Couple behind Fig & Olive Market celebrate with grand opening in Mercer

There’s a new locally-owned store selling authentic imported pasta, gelato, kitchen ingredients and more for lovers of Italian foods.

It’s been a month since Ashley Lengel and her husband, Jordan Lengel, opened Fig & Olive Market to give customers a thoughtfully curated specialty food shopping experience.

“I have a food importing business called Due Sorelle Food Imports, and I wanted to have a hub store for our wholesale accounts to be able to come and check out new products, see how things are on the shelf and test the market with the products,” Ashley Lengel said.

At Fig & Olive Market, browse imported goods, specialty meats, cheeses and grab-and-go sandwiches in the deli, paired with handcrafted espresso and artisanal gelato.

“At Due Sorelle, the primary focus is Italian dry goods, but the store’s an everything market, so it’s really a showcase of my love for food,” Lengel said. “My husband and I run the store together. We have different products from all over the world, from Germany, Japan, Switzerland, France, Italy and Taiwan, all the way to hyper local eggs and honey that are right from Mercer.”

The Lengels hosted a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Fig & Olive Market on June 20 at 151 North Diamond St. in Mercer, Pennsylvania.

Fig & Olive Market is open from 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; closed on Monday and Tuesday.

“It’s been just an absolute pleasure to meet everyone from town and the surrounding area, but we really have like a great team behind us, and it really would not have been possible without them. We opened up 17 days earlier than anticipated because we were lucky enough to find a really great team that was able to help get everything together very quickly,” Lengel said.

This summer, Fig & Olive Market is hosting classes for community members to learn from culinary experts through demonstrations and presentations.

There was an extra virgin olive oil presentation and sampling with Meriggio, a historic Italian brand, on July 1. A risotto and arancini cooking demonstration on July 11 with a culinary instructor at The Culinary Institute of America.

In August, there will be a chocolate demonstration. Tickets are limited and must be purchased in store or over the phone by calling (724) 269-7054 during open hours.
