Akron Public Schools board members on Monday held off on a measure to hire Youngstown City Schools CEO Justin Jennings as the district’s new assistant superintendent and chief of leadership and learning.

After a near two-hour executive session on employment compensation negotiations relating to Jennings’ hire, a board member moved to table the resolution for the remainder of the meeting.

Board members said they’ll continue to negotiate Jennings’ salary, benefits and contractual status for the position. It’s unclear when the board members could revisit the resolution. The board’s next meeting is set for Jan. 10, 2022.

According to the board’s Monday agenda, the position would pay $183,102.07 per year and Jennings’ start date was supposed to be Jan. 3. Jennings’ name is the only one board members were slated to consider Monday, the agenda shows.

Jennings has not returned calls for comment from Mahoning Matters, even to address questions unrelated to his job situation. A Youngstown schools spokesperson on Monday said Jennings is expected to issue a statement on Tuesday.
