The Butler Institute of American Art on Thursday had a groundbreaking ceremony for the museum’s 2022 building expansion project.

Work is beginning this week on the expansion to the east side of the building facing Wick Avenue. The 3,810-square-foot addition will provide the museum with more exhibition and storage space for its growing art collection, a news release states.

“We’re excited to pick up the extra exhibit space and much needed storage space for The Butler collection,” Lou Zona, director of The Butler, said in the release.

“The addition includes space to accommodate more of the kinetic works given to The Butler by The David Bermant Foundation of Santa Barbara, California, and a multifloor display space to be called the Grand Gallery, which will allow dramatic presentation of large-scale artworks that we have not had the opportunity or space to display before.”
