U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th, on Monday outlined three community projects on Youngstown’s South Side set to receive $4.35 million in federal funding.

The Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown is expected to receive $1.5 million for its Community Backyard Project, which includes renovation and upgrades on more than 200,000 square feet of club-owned property, including a walking trail and space to host athletics leagues.

The Mahoning Valley Community School, formerly known as Mahoning County High School, is expected to receive $850,000 to establish itself as a Community Learning Center. The project will bring a number of medical, dental, child care, counseling and other community services on-site.

The Youngstown Community Food Center, also known as Gleaners Food Bank, is expected to receive $2 million to add capacity and expand services. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the food bank outgrew its 15,000 square-foot space, according to Ryan’s office.

“Funding for these projects will make a big difference here in Northeast Ohio as we rebuild and put people back to work. These investments will help feed folks in our community, educate our children and provide them with out-of-school activities and better health care,” Ryan is quoted in a news release.

Here are some other local and regional projects funded through Ryan’s total $18 million capital appropriation request, which was fully funded:

  • $8.7 million for the Youngstown Air Reserve Station
  • $1 million for Akron Civic Commons

  • $1 million for Mercy Health
  • $1 million for Summa Health Sr. Ignatia Heritage and Reflection Center
  • $1 million for University Hospitals Portage Breast Health Center
  • $549,600 for the Village of Lowellville Wastewater Improvements

  • $312,744 for Valley Internet of Things Initiative
