Simply Slavic selected to receive Arts & Culture Challenge Grant
YOUNGSTOWN — The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley has selected Simply Slavic as a recipient of its COVID-19 Arts & Culture Challenge Grant.
Intended to incentivize community giving, a limited number of applicant organizations were selected and "challenged" to raise funds within 30 days. The foundation will then match all money raised up to $2,500.
The Simply Slavic festival, which usually takes place in downtown Youngstown, will be a virtual celebration this year on June 20. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Facebook and YouTube.
"Simply Slavic is unable to host a physical festival in downtown Youngstown this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The festival is this nonprofit organization's main fundraiser," John Slanina, Simply Slavic board chair, said in a news release.
Slanina said the event raises more than $7,000 in proceeds annually, which the board uses to fund its annual scholarships and community projects.
"We are extremely grateful to the Community Foundation for offering us the opportunity to help keep these important programs in place," Slanina said.
