Arrest warrant issued in fatal South Side shooting that also injured 3-year-old girl
The Youngstown Police Department has a suspect in the murder of 24-year-old Rawsheem Aponte last month along Mohawk Avenue on the city’s South Side.
Police are now searching for 20-year-old Vashaud Dwayne May, who is considered to be armed and dangerous, according to a Tuesday news release from the department. May is described as a Black male, 5-foot-9 and weighing 190 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.
Aponte was killed April 26 in a shooting in the 3800 block of Mohawk Avenue. He was the driver in a vehicle also containing a 23-year-old woman and her 3-year-old daughter, who were also injured by gunfire, according to police.
The initial police investigation revealed the shooting was “likely a targeted incident in which the suspects chased down the victims in their vehicle and fired on them in the Mount Vernon/Mohawk area of the South Side,” reads the news release issued after the shooting.
The suspects are believed to have fired more than 50 shots from multiple rifles with different calibers, Youngstown police Lt. Mohammad Awad told WKBN.
