Mahoning River cleanup set in Pennsylvania
The Friends of the Mahoning River (FOMR) and Tri County CleanWays (TCC) are teaming up again to remove tires and other trash from the Mahoning River in Lawrence County, Pa.
The cleanup event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 17.
Last year's cleanup removed more than 100 tires and pickup loads of trash from the Mahoning River and its banks.
Volunteers with kayaks, canoes and small boats or rafts will meet at the Beyond Corporation LLC Boat Access Area at Hillsville Road between 8:30 and 9 a.m. to register and unload gear.
Cleanup activities will stretch along the Mahoning River from the launch in Hillsville, to the takeout point at the McKinney Russell Boat Access Area on Covert Road in Edinburg.
Volunteers should bring a personal flotation device for each person. Gloves, bags and lunch will be provided by FOMR and TCC.
This year's sponsors include PA American Water for an Environmental Grant, the Bridgestone Tires4ward program recycling tires, Soils Inc for property access and equipment, Mahoning Township for brush clearing and Republic Services for donated landfill fees.
