YOUNGSTOWN — Mahoning County commissioners issued a proclamation at the Mahoning County Courthouse on Thursday to honor the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society's 60th anniversary.

The society works to preserve the legacy of the author, anthologist and editor of the Eclectic Readers published in 1836.

"His beloved stories stressed character, conservation, citizenship, values and the importance of literacy,” Richard Scarsella, McGuffey board chairman, said.

"A bridge, highway and school have been named for him due to society efforts. The McGuffey Wildlife Preserve, donated by the society in 1998 to Mill Creek MetroParks, is the McGuffey homestead and listed as a National Historic Landmark."
