YOUNGSTOWN — The newest member of the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office is a Labrador retriever named Cliff.

The sheriff's office established the new K9 unit to provide assistance to law enforcement officers in detecting explosives and bomb threats. The office partnered with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in training Cliff and his handler, Sgt. Kevin Myers.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol began its Canine Training Unit in 2015. The program has trained 54 canine teams throughout the state. For information about the program, email OSPK9Training@dps.ohio.gov.
