BOARDMAN — Spartan Stadium and Boardman Schools' other district outdoor athletic facilities have reopened for public use.

On Tuesday (May 26), the Ohio High School Athletic Association said school districts across Ohio can resume "skill training" and "conditioning" for athletes.

OHSAA guidelines will be followed at Boardman facilities. The high school's baseball and softball fields also are on the school's campus.

Marco Marinucci, Boardman's athletic director, said the public is welcome to walk the Spartan Stadium track or use bleachers for conditioning exercises. However, the turf will be limited to small groups of fewer than 10, with no close physical contact at this time.

On March 12, the OHSAA shut down all high school sports, ending the winter sports season without the completion of the girls basketball, boys basketball, ice hockey and wrestling seasons.

In April, Spartan Stadium closed to the public to abide by Gov. Mike DeWine's emergency order for social distancing.

Spring sports never got underway as the OHSAA postponed them when Ohio schools were closed, then canceled them when DeWine ordered schools to remain closed for the rest of the 2019-20 school year.

The OHSAA has not made a decision about whether fall sports will be played. Football, soccer, girls tennis, cross country and golf are the sports that get underway in August.
