The Western Reserve Port Authority has been awarded a $108,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for an upgrade at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport.

The airport will replace its wind cone, which no longer meets FAA design standards, according to a news release.

“These grant resources assist [Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport] in continuing to maintain its instrumental and navigational devices to ensure proper safety on landings and takeoffs,” Anthony Trevena, executive director of the Western Reserve Port Authority, said in the release.

“This wind cone is especially critical in assisting the many smaller aircrafts that utilize [the airport] to navigate wind speed and direction,” Trevena said.

The grant will come from the Airport Improvement Program, which is managed by the FAA. The program funds airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting and airport markings.

“The Youngstown Warren Regional Airport is an economic driver in the Mahoning Valley as it serves the general aviation community and the Youngstown Air Reserve Station,” U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th, said in the release. “This investment is not only good news for the airport, but the Mahoning Valley at large.”
