YOUNGSTOWN — The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley kicked off National Autism Acceptance Month on Wednesday by announcing the organization is expanding its June 5 event at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The Mahoning Valley Warrior quadrathlon will consist of a 5K, a "Individual People-Powered Tractor Pull" and two "Strongman" events. The first event will start at 9 a.m.

Athletes, runners, walkers and groups of any combination of those can also participate in events including the Ninja Warrior Obstacle Course, Group People-Powered Tractor Pull and/or the Valley Autism 5K. For community support and families affected by autism, there will be the 1-mile Autism Support Walk.

Presented with the support of the Knapp Center for Childhood Development, the family-oriented event also will feature the Special Needs Resource Fair, which will bring together local information and contacts for families affected by autism and other special needs.

"There is an event or two here for every athlete or supporter who wants to help with the great needs of the region's autism population," Aundréa Cika Heschmeyer, Autism Society of Mahoning Valley board chair, said in a news release, noting the addition of two Strongman events for athletes. "Plus, our annual Autism Support Walk is the only such family gathering in the Mahoning Valley that allows us to celebrate these unique families while raising funds to help them."

Event sponsors and resource fair providers are now being accepted.
