Youngstown City School District’s Chaney High School announced its participation in The National African American Read-in on February 23.

The National African American Read-In was established in 1990 by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month. Over 6 million participants worldwide have taken part in this important initiative.

What are the highlights of The National African American Read-In?

One of the highlights of the Read-In is welcoming the 2021 Ohio Poetry Association Poet of the Year, Quartez Harris.

Harris will read from his published works, including We Made It To School Alive, a full-length collection of poems by Twelve Arts Press, and Nothing, But Skin, a poetry collection published in 2014 by Writing Knights Press.

Additionally, Harris will conduct writing workshops with the Chaney Writing Fellows, a group of Chaney’s best writers from 10-11:40 a.m., who will present their writing and receive feedback from Harris.

Likewise, he is also holding a session specific to struggling readers.

Other guest readers from the community will read books or selections by African American authors.
