Young women, bright futures: YWCA honors local high school seniors
Several Mahoning Valley high school students came together to receive one of YWCA’s Young Women with Bright Futures Award.
Thirty-one students received special recognition on the morning of April 1 at a banquet by the YWCA. The event took place at the Holiday Inn in Boardman.
Teachers from 30 schools in Mahoning and Trumbull counties nominated young women in their classes for the award.
The banquet honored them for “leadership skills, academic achievement, creativity, and volunteerism.”
The following high school students each received the Young Women with Bright Futures Award:

- Alexis Garcia, Lakeview
- Delaney Shannon, Liberty
- Laila McCaughtry, Lowellville
- Saide Sassya, Mathews
- Mackenzie Regelman, McDonald
- Audriana Gaydosh, Mineral Ridge
- Kadence Rowley, Niles McKinley
- Isabella Beight, Poland Seminary
- Sadie Barker, Sebring McKinley
- Tara Wine, South Range
- Graciella Ebert, Springfield Local
- Isabella Slaina, Struthers

- Jenae Brown, Youngstown Early College
Sheri Bodo, a local small business owner who opened Common Goods Studio, spoke at the event.
Two students also received scholarships of $12,000 for first place and $8,000 for second place to pursue northeast Ohio or western Pennsylvania high education after high school for four years.
Margaret Byers received the Thomases Family Endowment award first place, and Alexis Garcia received second place.
The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and Denise DeBartolo York fund the scholarships.
