Watch on WKBN: Community members have expressed concern after the board of directors at Mill Creek MetroParks unanimously voted to approve the proposed deer culling plan for population control.

According to reports, the deer hunts monitored by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources is expected to start this September.

“Active white-tailed deer management is the responsible action to take to ensure that the beauty of a diverse ecosystem is alive and well for future generations of Mahoning County residents,” Mill Creek MetroParks Executive Director Aaron Young said.

‘Help Save the Mill Creek Park Deer’ group express concern over deer culling plans

He’s part of a public meeting in collaboration with the group called “Help Save the Mill Creek Park Deer.”

“I’ve been invited by a group of neighbors and patrons of Mill Creek Park to discuss legal, public relations and political strategies to cause the park board to revisit their decision to reinstate culling of deer,” Dann said.

The meeting is planned for 5:15 p.m. on April 18 at St. Mary’s Assumption Center at 356 S. Belle Vista Ave. in Youngstown.

“I think that ultimately the park board needs to know that there are lots of people who have concerns about whether and how to kill deer in the park,” Dann said.

Why are deer causing problems?

According to Mill Creek MetroParks, the white-tailed deer population is in “severe overabundance,” meaning there aren’t enough food resources for the growing population.

The plan was proposed on March 14 by the board to reduce the population. According to WKBN, Mill Creek averages 387 deer per square mile. Still, the park system says the optimum number for sustainability should be between 10 and 20.
