DeWine says Ohio State Highway Patrol, city police department can work together to fight crime
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said he believes the Ohio State Highway Patrol can work with city police departments around the state to help fight violent crime.
The collaboration in Youngstown was detailed last week in a press conference where Mayor Tito Brown was joined by representatives of the Youngstown Police Department and the patrol to talk about how the departments were working together.
“Help (is available through) the Ohio State Highway Patrol and they come in when the mayor wants them to come in for coordinated action,” DeWine said Thursday during an availability with media following an appearance in the city to promote his literacy plan. “We can’t have the patrol in every single day but in a very targeted way. We want to work with the city on this.”
‘We want to allow people to live their lives’
He called out gun violence in Ohio.
“The cities across our state are seeing a lot of crime connected with the use of guns,” DeWine said. “We want to allow people to live their lives. Some of the tragedies we have seen across the state are little 4-year-olds, 5-year-olds and 10-year-olds who get shot because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. “
The governor said he believes targeted enforcement can help fight the issue.
“The majority of the people who commit a crime in Youngstown, Ohio, or any other place in the state of Ohio are a small number of people,” DeWine said. “So we have to target those individuals candidly, go after them and lock them up.”
