Youngstown Phantoms host hockey playoffs this weekend
Cheer on the Youngstown Phantoms hockey team starting Friday at 7:05 p.m. as they host the USHL second round of the Clark Cup Playoffs at the Covelli Center.
Senior vice president of the Youngstown Phantoms, Kelsey Moreton, oversees marketing for the team and explained how successful the regular season has been.
“This is a good team and a fun atmosphere,” Moreton said. “They’ve been working hard all year. We had a lot of great milestones for this team, including most home wins in a regular season.”
Playoff season for the Youngstown Phantoms starts Friday
The Phantoms secured second place in the Eastern Conference of the United States Hockey League, Moreton explained.
The team received a bye week for the first round of playoffs, meaning they automatically advanced right away to the second round, which starts Friday, then continues on Sunday and Monday.
“So there are 16 teams, and half of them are on the east, half of them are on the west coast; we came in second place on the east coast,” she said. “We found out our opponent last night. We play the Cedar Rapids Roughriders, coming up here to the Covelli Centre, on Friday and Sunday, during the second round of Clark Cup Playoffs.”
If the Phantoms team, consisting of boys ages 16 to 20, wins the best of those three games against the Roughriders, they’ll advance to round three next week.
Youngstown Phantoms plan ‘White Out Night’ for Friday’s game
Moreton explained why fans are encouraged to wear white from head to toe to support the Phantoms for their first playoff game on Friday.
“The players, for home games, all have to wear their white jerseys, so we decided to do a big white out and [transform] the entire arena. It’s pretty dark and blue, and we’re just going to bring in a lot of energy and a lot of color ... to brighten up the place,” she said. “We’re all pretty excited about it.”
Moreton said a face painting booth would allow fans of all ages to get in the spirit.
“For a family that has young kids that just need something to do and are not involved with, like, all these other extracurricular sports, it’s just a fun environment to be around,” she said. “And I know, like, just talking from experience, like, my family got hooked on the sport... My kids love it; my two-year-old always asks, ‘Are we going to hockey?’ It’s things like that. You’re creating those memories with family or friends, just like coming out to that game.”
