MIKE BROWN: Mooney moves up to Division IV in football
The Ohio High School Athletic Association has announced its new division and region assignments for the 2023 football season.
One of the more noticeable changes for Mahoning Valley-area schools is Youngstown Cardinal Mooney which has bumped up from Division V to Division IV Region 13 this fall.
The Cardinals have a rich history in the sport. They have won more state football championships (seven) than any other team in Mahoning County football history. They were state champs in 1982, 1987, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011.
Division IV Region 13 is populated with many Mahoning Valley-area schools, including Poland, Girard, Struthers, Hubbard, Niles and West Branch, as well as Columbiana County schools Salem, East Liverpool and Beaver Local.
