Mahoning Valley Historical Society will be featuring some of the works of nationally acclaimed local painter and sculptor Maple Turner III in a new exhibit that opens on May 20.

The exhibit will be held in the Youngstown Foundation Community History Gallery, located inside Tyler History Center, 325 West Federal Street in downtown Youngtown.

The public is invited to meet the artist from noon-4 p.m. May 20 at Tyler History Center.

The exhibit will run until Sept. 1.

What is part of the exhibit?

This exhibit, Wick Avenue: Millionaire’s Row 1890 by Maple Turner III, takes the viewer to the turn-of-the-century homes of Youngstown’s Wick Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Crandall Park, with images also featuring men’s and women’s period dress. The exhibit also includes sculpture pieces and city street scenes done by the artist while living in New York.

A Youngstown native, Maple Turner III started painting when he was a child, a talent encouraged by his father. He won awards for his art as a student, graduating from East High School and later Youngstown State University. Turner spent time working at LTV Steel, but the shutdown of the mills spurred him to pursue an art career. He earned a BFA from YSU in 1999, then moved to New York City to continue his education.

In New York, Turner earned an associate degree from Parsons School of Design in 2001 and an MFA from City College in 2005. His career has been prolific, producing thousands of paintings and sculptures and exhibiting in New York, Paris, and elsewhere.

Since returning to Youngstown, Turner has continued to create and share his work throughout the Mahoning Valley, recently at the Butler Institute of American Art. Lou Zona, the Butler’s Executive Director, called Turner, “a rare talent who seems capable of doing most anything within the art realm.”
