Youngstown Police announced this afternoon that a 29-year-old woman has been charged with the overnight shooting death of a 13-year-old girl at a block party on the south side of the city.

Shamara Green was booked into the Mahoning County Jail on a charge of murder, police said. She is expected to be arraigned next week in municipal court.

Green was arrested following the death of the girl, who police identified at the noon press conference as London Jones.

The incident happened at about midnight in the 400 block of Carroll Street.

Jones was reportedly taken to the party by family members, police said.

What led to the shooting?

The shooting happened just after midnight when a fight happened before shots were fired.

“The fight was amongst adults,” Youngstown Police Detective Mohamad Awad said. “The disagreement led to a melee in the streets. The victim was completely innocent.”

Awad said Jones was at a nearby sidewalk when the shooting happened.

He added that police recovered eight casings from the scene.

Police upset about 13-year-old being out late on a school night

Youngstown police officials were upset why she was out past midnight on a school night at an event with adults where drinking took place.

“We must ask why a 13-year-old was out at this hour, Awad said. “In addition, multiple adults lied to us about the events of last night.”

Awad said Green is a friend of Jones’ mother.
