According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 23 people were killed in car crash fatalities over Memorial Day weekend in the state in 22 crashes.

OSHP records show it’s the highest number of traffic fatalities in Ohio in the past three years.

In 2020, 20 individuals were killed over the last weekend in May; in 2021, 18 people died in 15 fatal crashes during the Memorial Day weekend. All of the data is specifically focusing on a four-day period, May 26 - 29.

Overall, the Ohio State Highway Patrol made 10,463 non-enforcement contacts including 2,107 motorist assists over Memorial Day weekend.

Working Memorial Day weekend, state troopers made 19,980 traffic enforcement contacts, including 399 impaired driving arrests.



Troopers arrested almost 500 people last year for OVI over the weekend.

State troopers issued 2,797 safety belt citations.

The seat belt enforcement campaign continues through June 5.

“Too many times our troopers see tragic loss of life on our roadways due to irresponsible decisions,” said Colonel Charles A. Jones. “Before heading out, make a plan, designate a sober driver and buckle up.”
