Have you heard of Tai Ji Quan?

Pronounced tye gee chuwan, it’s a fall-prevention program based on scientific evidence. Participants focus on exercises for regaining muscle strength and improving balance.

Mahoning County Public Health is offering a free Tai Ji Quan balance classes ideal for older adults and people with a history of falls.

No prior experience is necessary. County officials said the class is ideal for older adults and anyone with a history of fall, leg muscle weakness or difficulty.

When do the classes start?

Free Tai Ji Quan classes start this week and continue every Monday and Wednesday.

Class starts at 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. at Jackson Township Community Room, located at 10613 Mahoning Ave. in North Jackson.

The 24-week program is scheduled to end in November 2023.

Registration is required, and you have to participate in the program by June 28 at the latest.

During the hour long class, participants will be led through a brief Tai Ji Quan-based warm up, “a core program emphasizing variations of the 8-form core program and concluding with a brief cool-down exercise.”
