NOTEBOOK: Monica Robb Blasdel’s bill advocates say will streamline tax filing process and help businesses passes Ohio House
Legislation to modernize and streamline the municipal net profits tax regarding remote work passed this week in the Ohio House, which was spearheaded by State Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel (R-Columbiana County). The representative spoke to the bill on the House floor.
“By streamlining tax filings, reducing administrative burdens and providing a simplified method for businesses to calculate their tax liabilities, we enable companies to allocate resources more efficiently,” Robb Blasdel said. “This will foster reinvestment in their operations, drive economic growth and create new opportunities for job seekers.”
Bill co-sponsored by Lauren McNally passes, requires automated external defibrillators in Ohio schools
State Rep. Lauren McNally (D-Youngstown) this week announced the passage of House Bill 47, a bipartisan bill developed in response to the near fatal incident involving NFL player Damar Hamlin that will require automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in Ohio schools.
“I’m sad that someone had to nearly lose their life for us to see these gaps in Ohio law,” said McNally, a co-sponsor of the legislation. “I’m relieved, though, that my colleagues brought forward this bill and I hope my counterparts in the other Chamber work quickly to get it passed and into Ohio law. It’s a common sense safety measure that should have been in place a long time ago.”
Introduced by State Reps. Richard D. Brown (D-Canal Winchester) and Adam C. Bird (R-New Richmond), HB 47 will require all school districts, community schools, STEM schools, college-preparatory boarding schools, and chartered non-public schools to place an AED in each school under its control. It also requires municipal sports and recreation locations to place an AED in each location under its control.

Lightning Safety Awareness Week is June 18-24
The Ohio Emergency Management Agency (Ohio EMA), National Weather Service (NWS), and the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness (OCSWA) are promoting June 18-24 as National Lightning Safety Awareness Week and encourage all Ohioans to know what to do before, during, and after a thunderstorm, and to practice severe weather safety and preparedness throughout the summer.
Lightning is one of the leading causes of injury and death from weather-related hazards. Although most lightning victims survive, people struck by lightning often report a variety of long-term, debilitating symptoms.
“Lightning can be fascinating to watch but can kill in an instant,” said Ohio EMA Executive Director Sima Merick. “In 2022, an Ohio resident was struck and killed by lightning while working on his vehicle. Be aware of your surroundings and go indoors when severe weather is approaching.”
