MIKE BROWN: Ohio coaches association to sponsor an eight-member football playoff beginning this fall
There’s good news for Ohio schools that have eight-member football teams, including Sebring McKinley in Mahoning County.
The Ohio Football Coaches Association has announced it will sponsor playoffs for eight-member football squads, starting this autumn.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association currently does not sponsor eight-member football, but it is hoped by some coaches that in the future it may consider it, especially with the OFBCA setting the groundwork by initially sponsoring it.
Who has eight-member football in Ohio?
Currently, only a handful of leagues have eight-member football in the Buckeye State. In the northern part of the state, there’s the Northern 8 Football League. Members include Danbury Lakeside, Toledo Christian, Holgate, Sandusky St. Marys and Stryker and Sebring McKinley.
Sebring petitioned for acceptance into the Northern 8 Football League following last season and was added to the loop this winter.
The Trojans will play their first game as a Northern 8 member Friday night, Sept. 15 at Sandusky St. Marys.
A tip of the cap to the Ohio Football Coaches Association for sponsoring a playoff that will crown a state champion for eight-member football. Hopefully, it will lead to other Ohio schools that have limited numbers on their football rosters to join the league in the future, or others that currently don’t have football programs, to consider starting one.
