MIKE BROWN: Special Thursday night games to kick off high school football season

Believe it or not, the start of the 2023 high school football season is just around the corner and some early Thursday night games will dot the schedule again in the Mahoning Valley.

Youngstown Ursuline and Steubenville to meet Aug. 17

Of course, a much-anticipated game on Thursday, August 17 will match perennial powers Steubenville and Youngstown Ursuline battling at Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium at 7 p.m.

The Irish finished 10-3 last season under head coach Dan Reardon, while Steubenville was 12-3 last autumn under veteran head coach Reno Saccoccia.

Niles vs. Howland on Aug. 17

Of course, another big game on the opening Thursday night will be Niles hosting Howland in their annual opening night rivalry game at Bo Rein Memorial Stadium.

Jackson-Milton will face Mathews on Aug. 17

The Jackson-Milton Bluejays will also entertain the Mathews Mustangs on Thursday, August 17.

Most of the other Mahoning Valley-area football teams will kick off their respective campaigns on Friday night, August 18.
