Sherrod Brown in Youngstown to discuss his Fentanyl legislation
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) is in Youngstown today to meet with local leaders and law enforcement to discuss his Fentanyl Eradication and Narcotics Deterrence (FEND) Off Fentanyl Act bill.
Brown was joined at a press conference at the Youngstown Police Department by Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene, Youngstown Chief of Police Carl Davis, and Brenda Heidinger, Associate Director of the Mahoning County Mental Health Board.
“I hear over and over from Ohioans that we need new, more powerful tools to prevent the flow of fentanyl into our communities,” said Brown. “Our bipartisan bill targets fentanyl at the source. We are going after the illicit fentanyl supply chain, from China through Mexico, to help stop this drug before it ever reaches our communities.”
“All law enforcement knows the devastating effects that fentanyl has in our community, so as an administrating agency of the Mahoning Valley Drug Task Force and a contributing member to the local DEA task force we welcome any new legislation that could potentially hamper the manufacturing and distribution of fentanyl in the Mahoning Valley,” said Sheriff Greene.
“These powerful drugs have claimed countless lives and continue to pose a significant threat to public health and safety. The Youngstown Police Department have partnered with other law enforcement agencies, implementing various strategies to combat this crisis,” said Chief Davis.
“The FEND off Fentanyl Act is another example of the work to improve lives and increase hope. With fentanyl being present in 79% and 91% of drug overdose deaths in Mahoning County for 2022 and 2023 respectively, it is now more than ever, important to address its devastating effects. Getting fentanyl off the streets decreases the possibility of overdoses and provides hope to those struggling with substance use and misuse, as well as their families, in the hope and possibilities of recovery,” said Brenda Heidinger, Associate Director, Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board.
