MIKE BROWN: Mahoning Valley cross country legend Laurie (Gomez) Henes continues coaching career at NC State

When you think of the greatest female distance runners in the history of Mahoning Valley track and cross country, you think of the great Laurie Gomez of Boardman High School. She won three individual state championships in track and three state titles in cross country for the Spartans in the 1980’s.

She has a notable coaching career

Now, Laurie (Gomez) Henes, she has guided the North Carolina State Wolfpack women’s cross country program to incredible success as their head coach. She has turned out many All-American distance runners as well as leading the Wolfpack to the NCAA Division I national women’s cross country championship in 2021.

She was named the national Division I women’s cross country coach of the year in 2021 and has been voted the Atlantic Coast Conference’s women’s cross country coach of the year on seven occasions.

Considered one of the greatest coaches in the history of North Carolina State in any sport, Henes was recently named to an additional post at the school. She is the new director of track for both the men’s and women’s teams at NC State, as well as remaining as the women’s cross country coach for the Wolfpack.

Henes is a graduate and former distance standout at NC State.
