Prevent Blindness Ohio focusing on healthy vision, early access to eye care for back-to-school season
Prevent Blindness Ohio declared August Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month.
As many kids return to school in August, Prevent Blindness Ohio wants kids and parents to focus on eye health and safety.
Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month
They have free resources online, including fact sheets and social media graphics in English and Spanish on a variety of health topics related to eye care, including:
- Eye safety concerning digital screen time
- Importance of vision screenings
- Financial assistance programs
- What is myopia? (nearsightedness)
- What is amblyopia? (lazy eye)
- What is strabismus? (crossed eyes)
These are some of the most common topics related to vision care for children.
If myopia is left untreated, children can have difficulty learning and fully participating in social activities.
Dr. Michael F. Chiang, director of the National Eye Institute, spoke about children’s vision and eye health initiatives of the National Eye Institute (NEI).

“For 115 years, we’ve made it our mission to ensure that children have access to the eyecare they need,” said Amy Pulles, President & CEO of Prevent Blindness Ohio. “By working as a team with parents, our program partners, and allied healthcare personnel, we help children take their first steps toward a lifetime of healthy vision.”
Save Our Sight Fund
Prevent Blindness Ohio works with the state of Ohio to ensure school nurses have all the resources needed to conduct vision screenings for elementary school students.
This allows a medical professional to identify any vision problems early, increasing children’s success in school from the start.
Over 70,000 children in northeast Ohio were given vision screenings in 2022 by Prevent Blindness Ohio.
The Vision Care Outreach program also allows impoverished families and families lacking the necessary resources to pay for vision care themselves to access essential early care.
They’re focused on eliminating obstacles and increasing equity in vision healthcare.
