Youngstown Education Association proposes time, place for talks with school board
Youngstown Education Association said they are open to negotiations.
They said have reserved times, dates and a location for talks.
Spokesman Jim Courim said the teachers union had reserved a spot at the Associated Neighborhood Centers, 1649 Jacobs Road in Youngstown, from noon-5 p.m. on Aug. 12-13 and 8 a.m.-noon on Aug. 14.
“The Board has repeatedly stated in public that they are willing to negotiate any time and at any place. We’ve made the necessary arrangements, and we now look forward to sitting down with them to collaboratively put our students first,” Couric said.
Why did the Youngstown Education Association file an unfair labor practice charge against the school board?
He added that the union filed an unfair labor practice charge against the school board for discussing labor negotiations in an Aug. 9 press release.
“We’re confused as to why the Board keeps claiming that salary is the sticking point here,” Couric said. “I want to be clear in stating that this negotiation is not about money. As we’ve been saying all along, YEA is willing to do everything that is necessary to ensure that Youngstown’s students have the best learning conditions possible and that Youngstown’s teachers have an important voice in crafting those conditions. We brought a very slim and simple bargaining proposal to the table last spring, and it remains as simple as ever. YEA members need the Board to recognize our voices and to allow us to best serve our students.”
The union has set a strike date for Aug. 23.
Youngstown City School District Communications and Public Relations Director Stacy Quinones confirmed that the union was in contact with the board.
“There were proposed dates from the union, but I can’t speak to if anything is finalized,” she said in an email Thursday night.
Quinones added that the district “will not comment on the specifics of pending litigation. but will vigorously defend” its position.
