A pilot program that helps law enforcement track and solve crimes in real time using live-video feeds has been extended through June 2024, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced this week.

The program, called TALEN (Technology Anonymized Law Enforcement Notification), was launched in August of 2022 and now has five partner law enforcement agencies in the Miami Valley. Fusus was selected as the vendor of the web-based tool, which streamlines public and private video feeds for law enforcement use.

“TALEN is like a supercharged, technology-enabled neighborhood watch,” Yost said.

“When a call comes into police, there may be information available already from a video feed somewhere in the area. You may be able to see the bad guy leaving, catch a license plate, get a description – or sometimes you might even see the bad guy doing the bad thing right on camera.”

Ohio launches venture capital programs for tech-based companies

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Lt. Governor Jon Husted, and Ohio Department of Development Director Lydia Mihalik this week announced the availability of approximately $111 million to support Ohio tech-based companies.

Two new funds - the Ohio Early Stage Focus Fund and Ohio Venture Fund - will help increase the amount of early-stage capital invested in Ohio technology-based companies, accelerate the growth of high-potential companies, and create a climate that supports the development, retention, and attraction of technology companies in Ohio.

“These programs will address gaps in early-stage capital as companies mature and new startups emerge, as well as for underserved communities that face barriers to accessing capital,” said Governor DeWine. “By increasing access to funds, we are ensuring that technology companies have the support they need to thrive in the heart of innovation.”

Ohio Early Stage Focus Fund will provide capital to professionally managed investment funds to support early-stage technology companies that are woman- or minority-owned or based in an area that has been underserved by venture capital. Organizations and private investment firms are eligible to apply for $1 million - $5 million of the more than $36 million available. Ohio revealed to be safer than most states for public transport use

New Hampshire is the safest state for using public transport, according to new research.

The study by pre-settlement legal funding company, High Rise Legal Funding analyzed bus fatality data from 2010 - 2022 from the Bureau of Transport Statistics as well as rail accident data for 2022 from the Federal Railroad Administration.

The total number of bus fatalities and rail accidents were compared against the population of each state to find the number of public transport related accidents per 100,000 residents. All 50 states were given a ‘Public Transport Safety Score’ out of 100 on this basis.

New Hampshire ranks as the safest state for using public transport in America with a Public Transport Safety Score of 100 out of 100. The state recorded zero bus fatalities between 2010 and 2020, as well as zero rail accidents throughout 2022.

Ohio is the tenth safest state to use public transport. With 96 rail accidents in 2022 and three bus fatalities between 2010 and 2022, the state has a safety score of 52.93 out of 100.
