‘This spot has a rich history;’ U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson sees McGuffey Wildlife site
Congressman Bill Johnson, the Republican representing Mahoning County residents in the U.S. House of Representatives, got to tour the McGuffey Wildlife reserve on the east side of Youngstown during his visit to the city on Aug. 29.
“This spot has a rich history,” posted the congressman on social media as he saw the childhood home of William McGuffey, the author of those popular McGuffey Readers that were given to young American schoolchildren in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Leaders of Mill Creek MetroParks facilitated the congressman’s tour.
McGuffey, who eventually rose to the presidency of the University of Miami in Oxford, Ohio, began his teaching career at the age of 14 in a one-room schoolhouse located in Calcutta in Columbiana County.
