Mahoning Valley native Scott Austalosh is debuting a new concept in calming and community music rooms for those with autism to support his daughter, Sophia.

Austalosh debuted his first set of rooms, Sophia’s Place, on Monday at The Carousel Center, a day program in Austintown for adults with developmental disabilities.

“It’s been my privilege as Sophia’s father to realize not only autism’s challenges but also its beauty, and the sameness of humanity we all share,” Austalosh said. “My hope is that Sophia’s Place will be a model for using printed technologies, music and sounds in other venues for people with autism across the nation.”

How a Disney Jr. star helped bring ‘Sophia’s Place’ to life

To help promote the program, Austalosh invited Genevieve Goings, the star of “Choo Choo Soul,” the long-running music-video show on Disney Junior, who has been a leading voice in various properties across the Disney platforms.

“When Scott explained he wanted to help people understand not just the challenges but the beauty of autism, and when I saw his passion for his daughter Sophia and her journey as an autistic person,” Goings said, “I wanted to help him realize his vision.”

Goings produced the music for the Music Room, lending her voice and creating musical sounds and samples that combined with the rooms’ other sensory experiences to develop a therapeutic impact for those with autism.
