Two great games on tap Friday in the Mahoning Valley

Week 6 of the high school football season will offer two games which are not only the best matchups in the Mahoning Valley but in the state as well.

Ursuline vs. Austintown Fitch

On Friday night unbeaten Youngstown Ursuline (5-0) will take the trip to Austintown to play the once-beaten Falcons (4-1).

Both teams have been impressive on both sides of the football.

Ursuline has defeated Steubenville (36-28), Parma Padua (38-7), Lakeside (50-0), Youngstown East (46-0) and Warren Harding (56-20).

Fitch has defeated Euclid (40-6), GlenOak (35-3), Cleveland St. Ignatius (24-21 in 2 OTs) and Stow (41-0) last weekend. Its lone loss was by a point to Central Valley (Pa.), 36-35.

Fitch defeated the Irish 42-34 last season and has won three of the past four meetings with the Irish.

South Range vs. Poland

The second game of the week Friday will see the once-beaten South Range Raiders (4-1) traveling to Poland to play the unbeaten Bulldogs (5-0) in a pivotal Northeast 8 showdown.

A large crowd is expected at Poland.

Both teams are coming off impressive wins, as Poland pounded Hubbard 53-0 last Friday while South Range went into Struthers and outlasted the talented Wildcats, 37-33.

The Raiders won last year’s game with the Bulldogs, 48-0.

South Range leads the all-time series with Poland 3-2 and has won the last three meetings in the series.

Another top Mahoning Valley-area game Friday night will see unbeaten Jackson-Milton taking its perfect 5-0 record into New Middletown to play Springfield (3-2) whose only losses were to a pair of 4-1 teams in Geneva and South Range.
