Sherrod Brown visits Boardman to push for Social Security fairness legislation

U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined local firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and other first responders Tuesday at a Boardman Township Fire Station event to discuss his bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act, which would end restrictions that currently prevent law enforcement, first responders and their families from receiving full Social Security benefits, after two previous statutes reduced them.

“Social Security is a bedrock of our middle class. It’s retirement security that Americans pay into and earn over a lifetime of work – and count on to be there for them when they retire,” Brown said. “It ought to be available to everyone, including local cops, sheriffs, deputies, firefighters, teachers – and their families.”
“The loss of income that is caused by the current Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision is a financial strain on law enforcement officers and their families,” Lt. John Allsop said. It’s a huge, additional burden placed on those who have spent their careers protecting our nation’s communities, such as Boardman Township - that they do not deserve or need. Led by Senator Brown, we urge Congress to act on this important bill to relieve the financial strain being placed on our nation’s public safety retirees including both retired police officers and firefighters.”
“Firefighters are not looking for handouts or freebies, we are asking for fairness and to receive the benefits we have earned and paid for,” Boardman Township firefighter Brian Hallquist said.
