Youngstown police warn about rise in Kia and Hyundai auto thefts
Youngstown Police Department officials said in a Facebook post on Friday that the department and nearby departments have recently seen a rise in Kia and Hyundai thefts.
According to the post, Kias impacted are mainly 2011-2021 models that take a key to start and Hyundai models are 2016-2021 Accent, Elantra, Sonata, Velostar, Venue, Kona, Tuscon, Santa Fe and Palisade. The auto theft issue started as a TIkTok trend.
Officials offered the following tips to prevent thefts.
- Consider a steering wheel lock or installing other anti-theft wheel locking systems.
- Secure your vehicle and remove the keys
- Don’t leave spare keys in your vehicle
- Park in well-lit areas
- Utilize tracking features offered by certain vehicle models
- Purchase GPS air tags.
