Members of the 501(c)(3) fundraising non-profit group Struthers Unleashed are a huge step closer to establishing a free community dog park coming next spring.

The Marjorie Hartman Foundation is now a primary donor for fundraising for Struthers Unleashed, just announced last week.

According to Struthers Unleashed president Josh Miely, the foundation is going to match all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000 from now through April 2024.

“This is a tremendous act of giving that will not only help the dogs of Struthers, but our entire community and we are eternally grateful. We’re eager to continue our fundraising campaign with everyone knowing whatever they give will immediately be doubled,” said Miely.

According to Miely, the idea for the dog park was born out of the Discover Struthers Comprehensive Plan which was officially adopted by the city last week.

“The City of Struthers, my office and my family are eager to see the Struthers Unleashed Dog Park at Grimm Nebo Field come to life,” Struthers Mayor Catherine Cercone Miller said. “After all the community engagement we did with the comprehensive plan, a dog park was listed as a top priority for the city. When we launched Discover Struthers, this [was] the type of project we hoped the community would rally behind.”

Plans are in motion to continue fundraising through the fall and winter.

Vision for the free-for-all dog park

Struthers Unleashed is hoping to break ground on the dog park in the spring.

It’ll be at Nebo Field near the tree line to ensure residents and athletes can still utilize the vast majority of the field for other activities.

First, they want to create a fenced area with fresh grass and benches for owners to relax while dogs play.

There will be two sections to separate small dogs from larger breeds. Each section will have dual-gate entryways to make sure entering and exiting the play area is safe.
